Communities and Justice

Finding a job

At DCJ we can make a huge difference in the lives of Aboriginal families and communities across NSW. We want Aboriginal people to have a strong voice when making decisions about their children, their families, and their future. And what we know is that these decisions are always better, stronger – and have more legitimacy – when they are made by Aboriginal people for Aboriginal people.

That’s why some jobs are Identified so that they are only open to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Or we target the recruitment to improve our workforce’s diversity of lived experiences.

This is where you come in.

You’ll find all the latest Targeted and Identified roles on Roles for Aboriginal people and general roles on Pathways

Getting other documents together for your application

Make sure you leave plenty of time to gather your documents together and/or to fill in the relevant application forms.

Many roles will require you to answer two targeted questions, prepare a cover letter and attach a resume.

Targeted questions

Spend some time on your targeted questions. You need to show that you did something that the question mentions, so leave yourself some time to think about this. Remember to give the best example you can think of.

Cover letters

Cover letters should be no more than one to two pages. Use them to introduce yourself and briefly highlight any experience you have that is relevant to the capability the role needs.

Resumes

Resumes should start with your most recent experience and work backwards. You only need to show the most relevant recent experience, as well as your achievements and any education or training you think is relevant. Keep everything brief and to the point.

Information alert

Please note that at DCJ we commonly use the word "Aboriginal", recognising that Aboriginal people are the original inhabitants of NSW, the part of Australia we are responsible for. We acknowledge and respect that Torres Strait Islander people are among the First Nations of Australia and that both Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are an important part of our staff and the communities we work with.
