Communities and Justice

Our commitment to Aboriginal people

At DCJ our purpose is to help create a safe, fair, resilient and inclusive NSW. In doing this, we must not repeat the past. Aboriginal people have historically been, and still are, overrepresented in all of our systems, and our predecessor organisations have played a major role in that.

In the words of the DCJ Apology to the Stolen Generations:

“Aboriginal people were terribly wronged. What was done cannot be undone, and its effects are felt today."

Read the full apology.

DCJ is fully committed to working in partnership with Aboriginal people, communities and with our Aboriginal staff to ensure our actions make things better.

We are committed to inclusion over exclusion. Most importantly, we believe in the principle of self-determination. We know that Aboriginal people are the ones best placed to make decisions about their families and communities.

We want all our Aboriginal families and communities in NSW to have a strong sense of belonging, to feel safe, valued and connected to culture and Country.

Working at DCJ – be part of building a culturally capable workforce

The services and supports that DCJ provides have a major impact on the lives of Aboriginal families and communities in NSW.

That’s why we want Aboriginal people to have a strong voice when making decisions about their children, their families, and their future.

We know the decisions we make are always better, stronger – and have more legitimacy – when they are made by Aboriginal people for Aboriginal people.

This is why we are strongly committed to continuing to develop a culturally competent workforce.

We want all our Aboriginal families and communities in NSW to have a strong sense of belonging, to feel safe and valued and, importantly, to feel connected to their culture and Country.

Closing the Gap

DCJ is committed to the National Agreement on Closing the Gap. Closing the Gap aims to address inequality experienced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Australia and achieve equal life outcomes. It does so through priority forms and targets.

Information alert

Please note that at DCJ we commonly use the word "Aboriginal", recognising that Aboriginal people are the original inhabitants of NSW, the part of Australia we are responsible for. We acknowledge and respect that Torres Strait Islander people are among the First Nations of Australia and that both Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are an important part of our staff and the communities we work with.
