Legal provides critical advice and support to the Attorney General in their role as First Law Officer and legal adviser to Government.

Legal has a leadership role within the Department and Government in ensuring that legal services provided to the Attorney General are of an appropriate quality to address matters of complexity, sensitivity and critical importance to the Government.

Our Service Standards

Legal aims to:

  • Acknowledge correspondence within 48 hours of receipt by this Office
  • Keep clients informed on the progress of matters where there is a delay
  • Provide timely and accurate advice on matters relating to the Department of Communities and Justice
  • Ensure that sensitive material is handled with confidentiality;
  • Assist people over the telephone or in person wherever possible.

Under the Privacy and Personal Information Protection Act 1998, the Department cannot give out information about individuals to third parties, except in very exceptional circumstances. If you are writing in on behalf of another person, please make sure you enclose that person's authority for you to do so.
