Judge Andrew Coleman SC has today been appointed to the Supreme Court of NSW.
Judge Coleman brings more than 37 years of legal expertise to the Supreme Court bench, including as a solicitor, barrister, Senior Counsel, and most recently as a NSW District Court judge.
Judge Coleman was appointed to that role in 2021 sitting in the civil and criminal jurisdiction of the Court, initially at Sydney, Campbelltown and Parramatta.
In 2022, His Honour commenced as the sitting judge for the Armidale and Tamworth District Courts and was the sole judge when working at those regional venues. He has been sitting in Sydney since June 2024.
Prior to joining the bench, Judge Coleman practised as a solicitor from 1987-1996 at Clayton Utz and then Freehill Hollingdale & Page in Sydney. During this period, he also worked for Linklaters & Paines in London for two years.
After becoming a barrister in 1996, His Honour practised in a broad range of areas and appeared in all courts and tribunals in NSW and most of the federal courts and tribunals. He was appointed Senior Counsel in 2010.
His Honour was a part-time senior member of the NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal for several years before being appointed to the District Court, sitting on the Appeals Panel, Consumer and Commercial, and Occupational Divisions of the Tribunal.
Judge Coleman has been a member of the Australian Army Legal Corps (Reserves) since 2016 when he was commissioned as a Major.
Judge Coleman will be sworn in as a Supreme Court judge on 1 October 2024.
Attorney General Michael Daley said:
“I am delighted to announce the appointment of Judge Andrew Coleman SC to the Supreme Court bench.
“His Honour is a highly respected lawyer and current member of the judiciary, and his expertise will be invaluable to the Court and everyone who interacts with it.
“I congratulate Judge Coleman on this well-deserved achievement.”
