NSW Domestic, Family and Sexual Violence Lived Experience Advisory Group

Why are we creating a lived experience group?

The NSW Women’s Safety Commissioner is seeking expressions of interest from people who want to join the NSW Lived Experience Advisory Group for victim survivors with lived experience of domestic, family and sexual violence.

We are creating the Advisory Group to amplify the diverse voices of people with lived experience of domestic, family and sexual violence. The Advisory Group will share their insights and advice with the NSW Government. This will ensure that people’s lived experience will help shape government policies and programs.

  • The Advisory Group will include up to 15 members who will meet regularly with the NSW Government. Members will be paid for their time and expertise (See "What does an advisory group member do?" and  “What support will I receive for my participation?”).
  • There is an opportunity for others to participate in a broader lived experience network. People who join this network will be invited to participate from time to time in activities such as surveys, one-off meetings and consultations.

You can apply for both groups using the same application form (see the link at the bottom of the page).

The Women’s Safety Commissioner encourages people with different experiences and backgrounds to apply. We recognise that true diversity includes gender, age, race, disability status, sexual orientation, religion, neurodiversity, education levels, and many more aspects of your identity and experiences.

We want to ensure that all people can participate in the application process for the Advisory Group, and are committed to prioritising the safety and privacy of everyone who applies. For more information about how we will protect your privacy, see the links at the bottom of this page.

If you have any further questions, or need any support with applying, please feel free to contact us at: livedexperience@dcj.nsw.gov.au

The Women’s Safety Commissioner acknowledges and honours the expertise of people with lived experience of domestic, family and sexual violence. We recognise the harms victim-survivors are subjected to and thank those who have already shared their stories and advocated for change. We remember and mourn those who have been murdered and acknowledge the ongoing pain of those who have lost loved ones.

How do I know if I am eligible for the Lived Experience Advisory Group?

You can apply for the NSW Lived Experience Advisory Group if you:

  • have lived experience of domestic, family and/or sexual violence
  • live in NSW
  • are aged 18 or over
  • have access to email and a phone
  • are able to attend meetings a minimum of 4 times per year. These meetings will be 4 hours long including breaks. Please note assistance is available for travel costs and childcare.

If you want to apply for the broader lived experience network, you must meet the first 4 eligibility criteria above.

If you have any current ongoing legal matters relating to domestic, family or sexual violence (including family court matters), this may impact your eligibility. A member of the team may be in touch to better undertsand your situation.

What do I need to think about before I apply?

Before applying to be a part of the NSW Lived Experience Advisory Group, it would be good to think about the following questions and consider whether you would be ready to join such a group, and whether this group is suitable for you.

  • Why do I want to be involved in the Lived Experience Advisory Group and what outcomes am I hoping for?
  • Am I ready to share my story with others and to hear their stories, knowing that I might find some things distressing?
  • Have I had enough time and support to feel safe and ready to be involved in the group?
  • Are there any ongoing risks from the person/people who abused me?
  • Are there any things I would need to do to manage the safety of myself and others?
  • Do I have a good understanding of my own story and also some of the different ways that domestic, family and sexual violence impacts people?
  • What are some of my skills and understandings I would bring to the group?
  • Will I be able to commit to the group? What would make it hard for me to participate?
  • What support do I already have in place? And what extra support would I need?
  • What do I do for self-care?
  • Do I have any legal or privacy considerations that might make it hard to be a part of the group?

Being on a lived experience advisory group can understandably be difficult and uncomfortable at times for those who have been subjected to trauma and violence. The Office of the Women’s Safety Commissioner will provide group members with individual de-briefing sessions with a therapist following each quarterly meeting.

It is important to note the Advisory Group is not a therapeutic group. We encourage group members to have their own therapeutic and healing support in place during their term.

How will Advisory Group members be selected?

Advisory Group members will be appointed based on a number of different factors:

  • your readiness to be part of a lived experience Advisory Group and share your insights with the NSW Government.
  • your commitment to collaborate with the other members of the group and foster a safe and inclusive environment where everyone can share their ideas and views.

The NSW Government will ensure that a range of lived experience of domestic, family and sexual violence is represented. We encourage applications from people across NSW:

  • of all genders, ethnicities and ages (over 18),
  • who are First Nations,
  • with disability,
  • from migrant, refugee and asylum seeker backgrounds,
  • from LGBTQIA+ communities,
  • who have lost family members to family violence,
  • with experience of the criminal justice system,
  • over 18 with experience of domestic, family and/or sexual violence as a child or young person, and
  • with different levels of experience of advocacy, policy or engaging with Government.

What does and Advisory Group member do?

Advisory Group members will use their skills and experiences to ensure that victim survivors’ perspectives are shared with the NSW Government to improve reponses to domestic, family and sexual violence.
