Experienced barrister Paul Johnson has been appointed as a judge of the District Court of NSW.
Mr Johnson was admitted as a solicitor in 1989 and was an Associate to Supreme Court judge Rex Smart before beginning work with Legal Aid NSW.
He worked for Legal Aid in various roles from 1990 to 2003, including in the Prisoners Legal Service and as the solicitor in charge of crime at Parramatta.
Mr Johnson was admitted as a barrister in 2003 and was based at Samuel Griffith Chambers until his appointment.
He has extensive experience in practising criminal law in all state jurisdictions, as well as inquests and inquiries, appellate work and parole hearings.
Mr Johnson will commence on 13 October 2025.

“Mr Johnson has extensive legal experience as a solicitor and barrister, which will strengthen the Court’s capacity to deliver timely and fair justice to the people of NSW.
