Women Leaders Domestic and Family Violence (DFV) Forum

The Multicultural Policy and Engagement (MPE) held the Women Leaders Domestic and Family Violence (DFV) Forum on 20 July at Parramatta Novotel. The forum was facilitated by Hala Abdelnour, the CEO of the institute of Non-Violence.

Over 100 religious and community Leaders from across Sydney attended to again basic understanding of domestic and family violence, the laws and referral pathways to better support women and community members who confide in them.

Participants heard from women faith and community leaders who shared their expertise in navigating systemic barriers in responding to DFV and how their culture and faith could be used as a strength.

Evaluations for the day indicated Women leaders understanding of NSW DFV laws increased significantly and that they felt confident to discuss DFV or refer women to appropriate services.

Also 90% of the participants stated that the forum had increased their awareness of available support services.

One participant noted that “It was a day truly well spent amongst highly determined and passionate women who have pledged to be the change agents in their communities and who have taken the task of empowering women in their communities to loudly and clearly say No to Domestic and Family Violence.”

The forum was based on the Department’s “Religious and Community Leaders DVF Seminars” which are mostly attended by men. However, many women, especially at the grass roots level do not hold formal religious positions and find themselves responding to DFV and supporting victims within their communities.

MPE wanted to ensure that these women are supported and equipped with tools, provided through the Forum.
