In 2022, data from the Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research (BOCSAR) reported that within a 2-year period, nearly 8000 families in NSW experienced frequent and extended interactions with multiple DCJ and CSNSW services such as Child Protection, Out of Home Care, Homes and Youth Justice.
A disproportionate number of Aboriginal families are embedded in these systems, indicating deep systemic issues that require urgent change.
Many of these families experience the ongoing effects of colonisation and racism.
Our team supports the vision that DCJ and CSNSW agencies are One Mob, with One Job to do – to work with and for families to achieve better outcomes.
Our goal is to help families to break the cycle of contact with multiple government services by co-designing new services and resources to:
Elevate Aboriginal voices and ways of working to uphold the dignity and safety of all families
Embed cultural knowledge and culturally safe practices in the work we do
Make it easier for families to navigate government systems
Our team has been leading co-design workshops in two footprint locations, South West Sydney and Orange. These workshops bring together DCJ and CSNSW leaders, managers, Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal frontline staff and community members to deeply listen, share knowledge and identify new ways of working together.
The current system is not working for all families. We know that a disproportionate number of Aboriginal families are in contact with DCJ and CSNSW services over a number of years (sometimes generations), indicating deep systemic issues that require urgent change.
By creating services with communities that respect lived experience and culture, we're building a system that supports all families to be safe and strong.
Co-design is a process One Mob One Job is taking with community:
We are creating a system that is fair and works for everyone. By focusing on cultural understanding and involving communities in each stage of co-design, we aim to create lasting change. This is about more than fixing what is broken – it is about creating something better for the future, together.
