About us
DCJ is the lead agency for the Communities and Justice portfolio. Formed as a merger of two departments in 2019, DCJ aims to work together for a stronger, safer, and fairer NSW. Our work includes operating an effective legal system, increasing access to social and affordable housing, supporting and protecting children and families, addressing domestic violence, supporting young offenders, and promoting community diversity and social cohesion.
DCJ provides a wide range of services to the community through our six service delivery areas:
- improving outcomes for Aboriginal people and communities
- people have access to justice and protection under the law
- people have access to suitable housing
- children and families are safe and supported
- communities are safe
- communities are diverse, engaged, and cohesive.
DCJ works with the community, non-government partners, and other agencies to improve outcomes for:
- people with disability
- people experiencing, or who have experienced, domestic and family violence
- people who have experienced sexual assault
- young people and adults in contact with the justice system
- people experiencing or at risk of homelessness and people in need of safe and affordable housing
- children, young people and families who need support
- Aboriginal people, who are overrepresented across all our services
- seniors and carers, whom we support to live active and inclusive lives
- volunteers and volunteer organisations, whom we support to build social cohesion, inclusion and community resilience
- people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
