Indigenous Data Sovereignty and Indigenous Data Governance are inherent rights of Aboriginal peoples and communities to exercise ownership over and govern the collection and application of Aboriginal data. This session was chaired by Brendan Thomas, a Wiradjuri man and Deputy Secretary, Transforming Aboriginal Outcomes, and had a presentation by Ian Brown, a Gomeroi man, and Maelona Stephens, a Yuin woman, from the Ngaramanala team. The webinar focused on how the Department of Communities and Justice (DCJ) has explored the principles of Indigenous Data Sovereignty and Indigenous Data Governance and their application within the context of government through the Ngaramanala: Aboriginal Knowledge Program.

Ngaramanala was formed within DCJ from a shared interest in strengthening the role of Aboriginal people and communities in guiding DCJ’s research. Ngaramanala is a current leader in governmental thinking in relation to Indigenous Data Sovereignty and Indigenous Data Governance.  The group provides internal governance to enable and respond to community-led Indigenous Data Sovereignty and Indigenous Data Governance.
