Video transcript

(Title 'Youth Justice Corroboree: Young people showcasing culture and belonging' appears alongside sound and footage of a Youth Justice corroboree and smoking ceremony, which continues as Abby speaks)

Abby: Tonight, we're having a massive corroboree here in the centre. This will be the first one, which is an amazing achievement by the young people and by the staff. They come from all different areas of New South Wales, and bringing them together and letting them dance and understand their culture and be present in the moment for this corroboree is a really great thing for the kids that live here too.

(New text strap appears. It says ‘Why are we holding a Corroboree?)

The meaning for the corroboree for Aboriginal people is when we all come together as one big family, like we're all meeting in one place together. We're sharing our stories, and then we go back to the community and the share the stories with other people out there too.

(Young Aboriginal men dance and play traditional instruments in ceremony).

It's very, very emotional for me 'cause I get to get in touch with my ancestors from my homeland up in North Queensland.

(Abby’s colleagues place ochre on her face and body)

I get to share what I have to give on to the kids here in the center, so they can share their stories with me, and I share their stories to other people.

(Animated NSW government logo appears and sounds fades)

Information alert

Please note that at DCJ we commonly use the word "Aboriginal", recognising that Aboriginal people are the original inhabitants of NSW, the part of Australia we are responsible for. We acknowledge and respect that Torres Strait Islander people are among the First Nations of Australia and that both Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are an important part of our staff and the communities we work with.
