Victim submission support

If you are eligible to make a submission, we can support you through the process. Eligibility depends on several factors, including the type and length of the offender’s sentence, and whether they are classified as a serious offender.

Making a submission is voluntary. It allows victim-survivors an opportunity to share their views and request specific conditions on the offender's leave or parole order.

We may ask if you would like to make a submission if:

  • the offender becomes eligible for unescorted leave; or
  • the State Parole Authority considers the offender for parole.

Parole consideration

Parole is the supervised release of an offender to serve part of their sentence under set conditions. While on parole, the offender is supervised by Community Corrections for a defined period. Parole supports an offender's gradual reintegration into the community.

In NSW, offenders serving sentences less than 3 years are automatically released on parole at the end of their non-parole period. The non-parole period is the minimum time an offender must serve in custody before they are eligible for release to parole.

For offenders with sentences longer than three years, parole decisions are made by the State Parole Authority.

Unescorted leave

This is a type of pre-release leave that helps an offender prepare for reintegration into the community before becoming eligible for parole. During this leave, the offender may temporarily leave a correctional centre under electronic supervision to participate in work, study, or home-based activities.

Getting help with your submission

We will contact you as soon as we have information about the offender to explain the legal process and let you know if you can make a submission.
