This is a simple process of being enrolled on the CSNSW correctional centre biometric identification database using biometrics and minimal demographic information.
All persons seeking entry into a NSW correctional centre where biometric verification is a condition of entry.
Biometric identification helps ensure the safety and security for all persons within a NSW correctional centre. Proving your identity through biometrics is faster and safer for all individuals; it reduces the potential for incorrect identification (ID), assuring only authorised persons can enter or leave a correctional centre.
If you have not recently visited a NSW correctional centre you will need to enrol in the new biometric system.
Correctional officers will advise where authorised contractors and visitors should enrol during their first visit. You will be instructed to approach a biometric camera. A photo is captured and the system creates a biometric map of the face and iris.
All biometric identification is contactless. You will not have fingerprints taken. When visiting an inmate you will still be required to have an authorised Visitor Identification Number (VIN) and an appropriate form of ID, such as a driver licence or passport.
Biometric enrolment is a one-time process, after which the system will recognise you for all subsequent visits to the centres where biometrics is in use (except for the Special Purpose Centre).
We are aware of the need to protect the privacy of all persons entering the correctional centre. The data collected is encrypted and is securely managed.
CSNSW Biometric Data is not shared with any other government or private organisations.
Enrolling your biometric information is a quick process. If you have the required documents, the biometric enrolment process will take approximately 10 minutes. There may be a short wait while we check your data.
Biometric enrolment is a requirement of entry into CSNSW correctional centres fitted with biometric access management systems.
Visitors and contractors that refuse to enrol will not be granted access into the correctional centre.
You should advise correctional centre staff if any of your demographic information changes (name, address etc). This is to ensure that when you arrive, the staff at the gate can see that your stored data matches your ID and any other information you have provided through the online visits portal.
Children under 15 years of age are not required to have their biometric identification taken.
For dress code details, visit the What to expect page. You will be asked to remove your glasses when capturing your biometric image.
Correctional Services NSW follows a strict privacy policy designed to protect the personal information that we collect from visitors.
