Flexible activity
The activity of learning classroom protocols and behaviours.
These activities can be implemented in numerous encounters in the classroom.
This flexible activity’s target group is children transitioning to kindergarten.
The Incredible Years Teacher and Child Training Program (IY): This curriculum includes units that provide children with opportunities to learn classroom protocols such as “Learning school rules”; and “How to be successful in school”.
Children enter kindergarten from a range of contexts. Some children have been in childcare and/or preschool prior to entering school, and are familiar with classroom protocols, (e.g., standing in a line, putting up hands, taking turns). Others have remained at home and school is their first introduction to a structured formal learning environment. These children might be the ones to benefit most from the opportunity to learn classroom protocols and acceptable behaviours.
