Corrective Services NSW

CSNSW social media community guidelines

When using CSNSW social media platforms, you agree to comply with these terms of use.

Purpose and use of social media channels

CSNSW social media channels share information about our services, correctional centres, community corrections, programs, initiatives and careers. They are not a way to obtain information about staff, victim-survivors, inmates, incidents, court matters, parole decisions or internal investigations.

We welcome your comments on CSNSW social media, and ask that you show courtesy, respect and do not use these platforms to abuse others, provide offensive or inappropriate content, or use them for unlawful purposes.

To preserve the integrity of CSNSW’s decision making, and to protect the safety and privacy of all involved, comments will not be provided on any aspects of pending, current or finalised matters before the courts, including matters involving inmates, staff or CSNSW operations. Information posted on our sites is not intended to be legal advice and should not be used as such.

Links from CSNSW social media sites to other websites are provided as a guide only and do not constitute endorsement of those sites by CSNSW. CSNSW is not responsible for the content of external websites.

Your personal information and privacy

You are asked to protect your own personal privacy and that of others by not including personal information of yourself or others on the page (for example: names, email addresses, private addresses, phone numbers, dates of birth, MIN numbers or other identifying details). Do not post information that could identify staff who do not wish to be identified, and inmates.

By submitting content to CSNSW social media platforms, you understand and acknowledge that this information is available to the public and is considered a public record. Comments and messages may be stored and used for safety, compliance, complaint handling and legal purposes, in line with NSW Government recordkeeping requirements.

Interactions on social media channels

Opinions or views expressed on CSNSW social media sites by people external to the department represent the thoughts of individual users and online communities, and not the agency.

While CSNSW makes reasonable efforts to monitor and/or moderate content posted on social media platforms, we cannot always respond in real time.

CSNSW social media platforms are heavily monitored, and responses will be provided during business hours. Our channels are not monitored as an emergency or crisis service.

If you are in an emergency, always call Triple Zero (000). If you know someone in custody and require support or wish to raise a concern, please speak with the relevant correctional centre or community corrections staff.

This page is not a formal channel to lodge complaints, request updates, report contraband, or contact specific people in custody or staff. For formal enquiries, complaints and feedback about CSNSW services, follow the links to contact us.

Inappropriate comments

CSNSW reserves the sole right to review, hide or delete any comments it deems inappropriate, and to limit or turn off comments on posts where needed to protect the safety and wellbeing of staff, victim-survivors, inmates, and the broader community.

Comments including, but not limited to, the following may be deleted or hidden, and may lead to a user being blocked and/or reported to the platform or to relevant authorities:

Abusive, threatening or hurtful comments

This includes harassment, bullying, intimidation or incitement of violence towards any person or group, including staff, victim-survivors, inmates or other commenters; inappropriate or discriminatory language (for example, profanity, racial, ethnic, disability, age, religion, sex, gender identity or sexuality‑based slurs); and personal attacks or defamatory statements.

Targeting or identifying individuals

Comments that encourage harassment, vilification or doxxing of any person, and those that identify or provide sufficient information to identify inmates.

Security, operational or incident information

Content that reveals or speculates about security procedures, movements of inmates, internal layouts or security infrastructure of correctional facilities, emergency responses, or any other information that could compromise the safety and security of centres, staff, inmates or the community.

Court matters, non‑publication and legal restrictions

Details relating to lodging complaints, seeking legal advice or discussing any matters brought to the department that are pending, current or finalised before the courts, including parole decisions; content that may breach suppression or non‑publication orders, confidentiality obligations or privacy laws.

Impersonation and misrepresentation

Views that impersonate or falsely represent any other person, including staff, or that falsely state or misrepresent affiliation with a person or entity.

Irrelevant, redundant or campaigning content

Irrelevant or repeated comments that do not relate to the topic being discussed, including promotion of events, groups, websites, organisations and programs not related to or affiliated with CSNSW, or sustained campaigning that disrupts discussion.

Privacy breaches

Comments that violate the privacy of CSNSW staff, victim-survivors, inmates, or stakeholders, including sharing contact details, private correspondence, or images or videos without consent.

Unlawful or harmful content

Content that could constitute a criminal offence or give rise to civil liability, or that otherwise violates any local, state, national or international law or regulation (or encourages others to do so), including threats, hate speech, harassment, or the promotion or facilitation of criminal activity (such as introducing contraband). This includes infringements of intellectual property rights – respect and acknowledge original creators when sharing content.

Persistent inappropriate use of CSNSW social media platforms may lead to the user being blocked from the agency’s platforms, and/or reported to the platform administrator or relevant authorities for breach of terms of use or law.
