Our ways of working

The Strategic Plan provides an opportunity to learn from each other and those we work with, to promote new approaches and build a culture of continuous improvement, and to unite us further.

We hope that, as we develop expertise in the ways of working, they will be demonstrated daily across the whole of the organisation in the behaviours, attitudes and mindset we bring to how we work together. The ways of working are how we will put our values into action.

Many of us already use these ways of working in our day-to-day work and will recognise these as business as usual. Other ways of working may be more innovative and will require courage and a commitment to change. There are good examples of their use in DCJ, creating the opportunity to learn from each other to elevate these ways of working into more of our work.

We hope that these ways of working will improve not just how we work within DCJ, but also how we work with government, non-government and Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations to support the delivery of services across the different sectors.

Each way of working reinforces and is interwoven with the others, creating a tapestry of service, values and workplace culture. Embedding these ways of working will help to deliver on our commitment and our priorities, lift capability and improve our services.

We put culture at the heart of our work

Hands with heart

We will:

Put Aboriginal culture at the heart of our work with Aboriginal people, families and communities.

Respect, acknowledge and incorporate diverse cultural perspectives and celebrate the cultural richness in our staff and in our communities.

Actively build anti-racist capabilities to strengthen belonging and inclusion.

We build trusted relationships through partnership and collaboration

Four hands on top of each other

We will:

Take the time to listen deeply to the people we serve to build respect and trust, to help us find solutions, and to be transparent in our decision-making.

Develop a shared understanding of our responsibilities and deliverables with our government and non-government partners, and negotiate formal agreements with all partners equitably.

We demonstrate accountability as stewards and commissioners

Person with a shield with a tick inside.

We will:

Contribute to an experienced, capable public service that upholds probity, looks to the future, and works with partners to deliver effective services for the diverse communities we serve.

Consider and respond to the potential impacts of change across the multiple complex systems we support, and intentionally shape these systems to meet outcomes.

Employ consistent commissioning practices to deliver continuity for providers.

We are people focused and family-centred

family standing next to each other

We will:

Create safer ways and spaces for individuals, families and kinship groups to share information and have a say in decisions that affect them.

Seek solutions for people at the earliest point of contact with DCJ and enable equitable access to services.

We listen to and learn from lived experience

We will:

Listen to and learn from the lived experiences of the people we serve, and be accountable to the continuing trust placed in us to use this knowledge.

Engage in dialogue with the people, families and communities we serve to apply their collective wisdom to problems.

Adopt innovative approaches to service and program development, such as co-design.

We use trauma-informed practices

We will:

Focus on preventing further harm to the people and families we serve and apply trauma-informed design and practices to the delivery of our services, strategies and policies.

Create supportive environments to foster trust and look for opportunities for healing.

We use data and evidence to inform our decisions

Screen with a graph in it

We will:

Use data, evidence of best practice and evaluation to transparently drive decision-making, service delivery and policy development, and manage our performance and accountability.

Draw insights from, and promote, shared data across all DCJ services, where appropriate.

Explore opportunities to increase data transparency and share disaggregated data with local communities to develop capability and a shared understanding of community needs.

We promote knowledge-sharing and innovation

We will:

Collaborate and share information and learning across DCJ to continuously improve services and build staff capability.

Support a culture of innovation, problem solving, appropriate risk taking and reflection to improve outcomes.
