Nowra (Yuin and Dharawal) - Aboriginal Art Collection

At our Community Services Centre in Nowra is The Story of Nowra - a collaborative artwork developed through the Cultural Inclusive Advisory Group and in partnership with the children of the Cullunghutti Aboriginal Child and Family Centre.

Inspired by the Acknowledgement of Country plaque, the artwork centres on the Black Cockatoo as a symbol of storytelling, spirituality, and connection to Country. Working together in an initial workshop with the artist, children contributed handprints that were then transformed into a finished artwork using dot painting techniques.

The painting depicts the local Aboriginal legend of Cambewarra (Cullunghutti) mountain and the Nowara (black cockatoo in Dharawal).

About the Artist

The artwork was created by Kevin Mundy, a First Nations Yuin artist from Wreck Bay. Kevin’s contemporary practice is informed by the flora and fauna of Booderee Country and stories shared by family and Elders.

Kevin has exhibited at the Shoalhaven Fine Art and Framing Gallery and participated in exhibitions and competitions at the Shoalhaven Regional Gallery, Jervis Bay Maritime Museum, and the Black Cockatoo Art Prize. In 2024, his artwork was displayed in the Mayor’s Office at Shoalhaven City Council.

This year (2026) Kevin’s artwork was purchased by the Booderee National Park to be used as the official design celebrating the 30th anniversary of the hand-back to the Wreck Bay Community.

He continues to work with the Wreck Bay Aboriginal Community Council and creates artwork at Scribbly Studio in Woollamia.
