Applications open for two new members of NSW Sentencing Council

NSW Attorney General Michael Daley is calling for applications from people who would like to be considered for appointment to the NSW Sentencing Council.

The Sentencing Council advises the Attorney General on sentencing matters. It comprises 16 members with diverse experience, including judicial officers, prosecutors, criminal defence lawyers, police, victims’ advocates and members of the community. It also advises on standard non-parole periods and on guideline judgments (court decisions that provide guidance to judges on how they should sentence offenders).

The Sentencing Council has two vacancies: a general community member; and a member with expertise or experience in Aboriginal justice matters.

Both applicants must have an interest in, and insight into, the issues the criminal justice system is facing generally, and sentencing in particular, and the ability to work co-operatively and exercise sound judgement.

Applications are now open and close on Sunday 1 October 2023.
